Before we had the advanced electronics we have now, I remember an old fisherman who would take the first medium sized crappie he caught hook it on rod equipped with a float too big(or balloon) for the fish to pull under for long and let him swim off from the boat. He said that fish would go back and stay with the school and he would fish that area.
