Good job Doug
Doug Wynn shows us how he uses inexpensive line counter reels when trolling crankbaits.
Great video Doug, thanks.

Thanks guys. We will be filming a new series of videos soon. I'd like to ask if any of you have suggestions for videos, I sure appreciate your input.
We started these on the suggestion of the owner and producer of Explore Kentucky Lake website. Shawn takes care of the filming and post production also. I just start talking when he starts the camera. He approached me about doing the videos and I was totally skeptical about my ability to come up with content then deliver it on camera without looking like a fool. According to the huge amount of positive feedback we both get, we must be doing it right. My skills at social media are very limited so I depend on my wonderful wife Vicki to get me thru most of that. I'm just a county redneck who loves to and lives to fish.

appreciate the video. I have thinking about getting a line counter reel but thought they were expensive.
I've heard you mention several times that you don't calibrate your line counters. So if that's true how does depth charts do you any good? I recall a topic last year about line counters where I mentioned the importance of calibrating them and your response was you normally just pull numbers out of your rear end and you didn't have time to get technical with clients.
As I understand it .... those "charts" are based on the lines running at about a 45deg angle for depth accuracy ( Pythagorean theorem ). That would mean that approximately every 5ft of line out would equal 3 more feet of depth, or every 1ft of line out would equal about 7 inches more depth. An uncalibrated reel would still likely measure with a degree of accuracy that wouldn't throw the charts accuracy that far off. Even the charts have "specifics" that have to be met to get the results they claim ... like 10# test diameter mono line, 2oz weights, and a 45deg line angle. Any deviation and the depth at which the bait would run would be different than what the chart specifies. A line counter reel with less than the "correct" amount or size line would only skew the depth of the lure by a fractional amount.
Crappie don't school in a flat, horizontal shaped group, but in a loose "ball/oval shaped" group ... sometimes several feet deep vertically. And sometimes they're scattered over a much wider area & at varying depths. IMHO ... the +/- inches or feet difference created by an uncalibrated reel or running your lures not using the exact specifics of the chart isn't going to be that big a deal. Besides, the fish will move up or down in depth to intercept the lure. They do "hear" or "feel" the bait coming towards them, long before they can actually "see" it.
Anyway, that's just my on the matter.
Fish on Line thanked you for this post
I've calibrated several Shakespeare ATS15 and Okuma Magda 15 reels with the amount of line I normally put on each reel and found them to be close enough to exact that I didn't see it as a problem. When the PTD says X# of feet of line Bait Z will dive X# of feet deep, I'm already letting out a few feet more line because I run 12 pound Trilene Big Game line instead of the 10 pound the PTD calibration is for. I start and run most of the day with 6-10 baits that are rarely within 10 feet of the same amount of line out from far side to far side rod. When I have 2-4 clients on the boat, the last thing I'm worried about is reel calibration and we still do pretty well as it is. The last thing I would do is criticize somebody who calibrates their reels. If a person has the time and want-to, go for it. A very good friend of mine calibrates every reel any time he changes line. I'd say our typical catch over the season will be very close.
