I have yet to accomplish this but would like to hear the stories from guys who have. What technique, time of year, lake “if you want to share” and type of bait.

I will let you know when it happens. I have seen one live 3 pound crappie in my 55 years of life. My dad and his buddies caught it on a trotline back in the early 70's. My job was to bail water with a coffee can out of the wooden jon boat while they checked the lines.
Went to Mississippi....
Actually haven't done that or caught a 3 yet, but I lost one years ago right on the surface that wrapped me in a limb that would have gone 3 easy

Haven't landed one, yet
But, I'm pretty sure I hooked into one .... TWICE (consecutive days) ... fishing a minner under a float on a 10' collapsible pole while fishing the "buck brush" at Barkley Lake, late April, back in the early 1970's
I know it had to have been the same fish, because it was hooked in the same spot each day. I'm pretty sure it was a 3# fish, because I had been catching 2.75# fish and swinging them in the boat on that pole. When I hooked into HER, I had to stand on my tippy toes, hold the pole over my head, and try to swing it towards me. First day's attempt I skipped her across the top of the motor of my 15' boat & she got off .... second day's attempt I overcompensated my swing towards me and flung her on the other side of the boat and she came off when she landed in the water.
Here's a pic of the size fish I "WAS" able to successfully swing to me & land :
Plan on getting mine on Poverty Point in March. Probably on a shiner.
The older I get the more I realize the therapeutic benefits of fishing

I just tossed a jig into the aquarium at Bass Pro.
BP was kind enough not to press charges.
