I own tons of fillet knives and this one is nothing special. Just a group of friends passing time and having fun between seasons. Let the laughter commence.

Great DYI video. My brother has made many different knives using a very similar process... some surprisingly well done and good looking too. Well done and quite interesting too.
I also agree that that knife sharpener does a great job for the money... I've worn out several and hope to wear out several more... Lord willing.

Would never have thought of that and I definitely would not be testing the knife on my arm like that. if I did you know I would need stitches. LOL

I will be getting one of those sharpening tools though. Comedic but informative video.

I learned how to sharpen knives from my dad. There is a stone out there on the market that we have used for more than 40 years. The company actually stopped making them for awhile and, anytime we found one in an old tackle shop, we bought it. Not sure why as they never wear out. Those devices I use in the video are ones that I use to keep an edge on the blade. As I heard in one of Doug's videos is, the easiest way to sharpen a blade is to never let it get dull! I use them for skinning knives, boning knives, and fillet knives. My main knives for hunting and my pocket knife all get sharpened with this stone I am refering too. I've always used ceramic!

The stone I am referencing is from Bear Paw Tackle. It is a Michigan based company that has been around for years. I've spoken of them in reference to their electric scalers.

I've made knives out of a bunch of stuff. The majority of them are very purpose driven as it is hard to find exactly what you are looking for. I've used old kitchen knives, cleavers, files, circular saw blades ect... All of them have their uses. I have a boning knife I made that is better than anything I could buy. It has the right curve, the right angle, and flexes just right. I also have a knife specifically for making your first skinning cut on coyotes, fox, deer, and other fur bearing animals. It allows me to make my first cut around the hoof or paw and up to the vent without the knife coming out of the skin. Another knife you simply cannot find in a store.

That is really cool. Those two videos combine my 3 favorite hobbies. Fishing, woodworking and metal work.

I guess metal work isn't a hobby anymore, it pays the bills now. LOL

Steve, I'm envious of your planer. Mine is the table top model. You've got the big boy.

One word of advice for anyone who tries this at home. Make sure you wear leather gloves when using a cutting disk on the angle grinder. Leather won't stop that blade but it will do a good bit better than cloth. I've taken 3 guys to the doc to have them sewn up in the past 5 years from cutting disks getting ahold of them.
