In my humble opinion I think today's equipment is made to catch fishermen. Anything will catch fish. Enjoy what you have and have a good time.
I have to have rods that feel right to me, so I have plenty, I make my on jigs for fun and fish. I use 3 fish finders and keep around 26 poles and rods rigged on my boat so a partner and I can fish any way we need to or want to- so what is my favorite way to catch crappie and bream- A single B&M Sam Heaton 9' lite. Day in and day out. Sadly- I buy a lot of things I don't need! Fishing is my only hobby. I HAVE LEARNED TO BUY THE BETTER EQUIPMENT, I go to have fun. THE FISH DON'T CARE WHAT YOU FISH WITH & NETHER DO I. SO ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE AND GO FISH! I FEEL LIKE I CATCH LESS FISH NOW, than before I got into the crappie craze. Certainly would have saved a lot of money. I'M NOT COMPLAINING BECAUSE I LOVE IT!!
I think a lot depends on what kind of fishing you do. If you are casting and jigging, a more expensive, higher modulus graphite rod DOES make a difference in sensitivity, if you are also using a quality low-stretch line. You will be able to feel your jig, and bump it through the structure so much better than with a soft rod.
That being said, a decent rod doesn't cost nearly as much as they used to. I have recently fallen in love with the Shakespeare Micro Lite Graphite rods. $12.99. A $120 St Croil or Loomis might be a tiny bit better, but not worth it, in my opinion. Still, I wouldn't begrudge anyone for buying the nicer stuff
As stated above, fish with whatever you like. Especially for crappie. This is not big game fishing, where tiny differences make a huge difference.
