Killing minnows

I have an Engel. It works great but if I ever need another one I'll get a cooler, aerator and make my own.

I have Engel cooler for my boat, 120 igloo cooler to hold my bulk minnows, we just keep rotating 2 liter bottles of frozen water change out water about every week and half.

freeze a few bottles of water and drop one in ever so often . i have been doing this for a couple years works great

My 13qt holds a pound of minnows, which I think is roughly 12dz, no problem.

Yeah the smaller would work for that small amount. If you want to go larger for other bait in the future you will not be sorry.
For the time being, sounds like you are just using a bucket? Try freezing some water bottles and keep them in your cooler with the ice or alone and throw one in the water with the minnows through out the day to keep them cool. You can feel the water as you grab them to bait your hook. Just add more as needed. The cooler the better and out of the direct sunlight. Get a lid if you don't have one.

Another tip to keep minnows alive is get some ammonia remover from the fish tank isle at the store. It will help keep them alive much longer. Keeping them cool and using that I can keep a batch alive for a week or more.

when we minnow tipped back when we killed our shiners on purpose and put halves on our jigs .....tip of the day per say ...
lol and yes it will outketch a whole shiner all day long in the right hands ....

There is really nothing to keeping live bait healthy all day, overnight or a week or several weeks every summer… IF you really know how to make and maintain excellent livewell/bait tank water quality continuously while that bait is in captivity or being transported.

1st, a crystal clear understanding of what a “functional” livewell actually means is necessary? A livewell is a real life support system and must a life support livewell/bait tank system must be capable of keeping baitfish alive and healthy all day or many days regardless of the stocking density. Check it out - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livewell Bait tanks, ice chests or 5 gallon plastic buckets are only containers used to hold water and live bait. Any life support system is totally worthless if it fail to maintain life, right?

It makes little difference whether your livewell is under-stocked or overstocked, IF you can and you will maintain great water quality continuously.

BUT, if you don’t know “How to” or you cannot or you don’t want to go to the trouble of insuring great water quality in your bait box, your bait will get sick and die in the box every summer and that’s a FACT. And you know that so well, especially every summer when the environmental water temperature hits 79 F.

So, how do you learn how to insure great bait tank water quality, stop the dying and cut your losses and aggravation in the summer? GOOGLE – livewell water quality,DO,CO2,ammonia,acid water


How bad do you really want to stop your summer bait death and dying in your livewell/bait tank? Of course that is always your personal choice to fix your water quality problems any time you want; today, this month, next year, in 5 or 10 years or never fix the problem and just live with it.

I can’t do-dat is definitely an easy choice and as well as a common choice.

Keeping bait alive and healthy is easy for any fishermen that knows how to do-dat. All the bait shops and hatcheries know how to do-dat too. And they are the real experts at keeping and transporting live bait… they make their living doing it.
