I use spinning reel, and I do agree that it's harder to land fish when fishing shallow and 14' rods. That's the only problem I have .

I like to used bait casters when spider rigging there no casting involve. Like to use spinning reels for long lining more easy to cast.

Hello : I also switched from spinning reels to bait casters. I buy reels that have a thumb bar and flipping switch . With the flipping switch I can release line with the thumb bar and just release the thumb bar and the reel is locked in and ready to go , no turning of the handle to lock it in . I buy high quality bass reels . They have great drags . I buy them on E-bay. Brands are Diawa , Quantum , Shimano and Abu Garcia. I pay $15.00 to $25.00 apiece including shipping Last month I bough 2 brand new Diawa reels, that were old stock , a Triforce-Z 153A the other a Procaster -X153i V . Paid $44.00 total for both to my door. I want good drags as I have caught Walleyes to 8 lbs , Catfish to 10 lbs , Bass to 6 lbs and a 20lb. Buffalo . Good Luck . O - R
Bait casters for me, easy to operate and easy to stow.
I use $10 spinning reels for my spider rigging. I did use the fly reel looking reels but they are so slow to reel in any line I don't care for them at all. I almost never open the bail on my reels, I just strip the line I need as I count how much line I'm wanting to fish. They are a bit more cumbersome to stow for highway travel but really not that big a deal to me. I'm using 12' rods & generally fish 20' or less but this is my first year rigging and still learning.
I use Daiwa underspins ... and cut the trigger off real short ...
I like the rear drag ...
