So off I go in the dark first thing early to a lake west of town . I get there about daylight to a bunch of honkers coming in on their final approach .Its very chilly and there is a fair north wind and not a soul around anywhere . I tell myself maybe a quick pitch or 2 off the main dock by the store and walk out on the pier . I drop the jig down a few times and nothing . I move out a bit deeper and drop it right to the bottom as I kinda think these fish may have gone full winter . BAM goes a huge thump, fight ensues and line breaks off .....
Now I am pumped as it seemed like it was a large crappie and of course I didn't even bring a spare jig with me , so back to the truck I go and I put a few 1/8 jigheads ....( I almost never use ) in my pocket as the wind is picking up and my mister crappie camo line in 6 lb test is pretty stiff in the chilly air . I opt for a 3 inch long bait in a natural color as I know the bait size in that lake is pretty large .
Ketchn of crappie commences right quickly and to be sure that there MASK is a pretty good north wind face shield as well
I hit 2 spots and managed only crappie and all of them were parked in water around 15 foot deep on the bottom . Size was highly variable on the crappie and some were right nice ones . So I have a number I need for dinner and its 3 or so and I grabbed me a bucket and invited 3 of them to the house for dinner ......pitched a few keepers back for whoever might want them and down the road I went , this will be the last episode of the MASK for the year though and I hope everyone enjoyed Halloween .
stay tuned but don't stay thirsty
