Boats need a brake pedal sometimes don't they? lol.
I run very slow on plane at night sometimes running jugs.
You guys running lakes may not have this problem but running the Warrior River I have to watch for floating logs a lot.
Some years ago we lost a good friend running the Warrior when he got to close to the bank at night and an over hanging limb caught him under his chin. Two others were thrown from the boat. My friend died on the river bank that night. He left a wife and three small boys behind.
So before you run faster than you can see, please look around you and count the cost. Life is like a 25 cent piece. Spend it anyway you want. But you can only spend it one time.

They most certainly do, unfortunately many have a gas pedal only - a "hot foot". They claim it impresses the chick's, or I should say, their egos.

I was on Jordan Lake NC one morning running about 1/3 speed in my Hydra Sports bass boat about 45 minutes before daylight with full running lights when another bass boat running WOT with no lights blew past me less than 20 feet away. I heard them hit something hard several hundred yards ahead and the engine cut off immediately. I backed out of it and kicked fog lights on to search. I found them both getting to their feet. They'd hit a huge floating log about 5 to 6 feet around and 20-25 feet long. It cracked their hull and knocked both to the floor. If the fool driving hadn't been hooked up to the kill switch, they might have flipped. They had a few broken bones & cuts, but neither was hurt badly. Another boat from their tournament that had been running behind them called in a boat to tow them back. They were cussing the log as I left them (?!?!). Fools.

    Jim
