Some of the KY guys or Chaunc who were on the Erie trip have pics of the guide's boards. They were HUGE, probably 3 feet long. They had some sort of hinge that let them fold flat. He used weedeater line from the mast to the boards.

Heart Cypress will work good as red wood. It is a little lighter in weight

Here's the board we used in our Lake Erie trip with Chaunc ...

The aluminum cross member was detachable to allow the 2 boards to fold down together for easier storage ...

Not sure, but I am beating that redwood is used for rot resistance. Any hardwood should work fine, IMO, if it is painted regularly.

Makes sense, I know oak is heavy and if not sealed w/o soak up water and loose it's buoyancy

John, if I remember correctly, that Erie board was painted with some sort of heavy paint. It may have been sealed with epoxy or even fiberglassed.

You can make your own releases with shower curtain rings. Either solder a little alligator clip [roach style] to it or use a rubber band off it.

You can get the complete setup from one of our sponsors. FishUSA - Complete fishing tackle at America's Tackle Shop has a nice assortment of trolling equipment. If I'm remembering correctly, there is one for sale on the ohiogamefishing site. Might have to go back a few pages to find it. I'll look for it.
