This post was started awhile ago, but I want to add one more thing. For those of you folks believing that you have to "set the hook hard" with a SHSS, let me state for the record that in my experience just the opposite is true. I have 3 SHSS rods and love them. Of course, I'm using 2# test Fireline Crystal as my main line (on all my rods), with a 4' section of fluorocarbon for a leader. Have never had a problem setting the hook and I catch & release an awful lot of crappie each season. Maybe you should consider using a braid?
