number 8 sickle 1/64 minnow head ....small plastic bait ....lots a fry in the water around the surface ....anything larger hook wise and you ketch nada .....falls out of the strike zone way to fast and does not look like a helpless lil fry fish in the water ....so you see there is a method to my madness , and yes it was a good solid toad size fish ....in a heavily fished spot in the DFW metroplex .....

LOL , I am by no means implying everyone use a small hook sir , and in some cases I think a big hook helps . I just happen to target heavily pressured fish in many spots and in order to ketch anything of size and or numbers if I am not down sizing I am not ketchn . in the colder months and late summer months I go larger as the average bait size is larger. Right now we have a lot of small baby fry fish in many spots I hit , so I drop down a size or so and try to emulate the bait sizes they are targeting

I never use small baits, I guess it makes sense to not use small hooks then. Lol. Crappie Minnows here are 3.5-5" long...
Really depends on where and how you fish. Where and how I fish you will not use a big hook and get bites and you will stay hung up. I use 4 an 6 most of the time and I catch plenty of big fish even big cats and bass. I've landed 20lb cats on a #6 hook and 4lb line. Had a friend land a 40lb blue cat in the same line and jig hook 30min to get to the boat he followed it will the trolling motor for around a mile so don't doubt the smaller hooks.
