I've fished a lot of years, like lots of folks here, and focused on different species along the way, both fresh and salt. I'm thinking that the total experience has given me the confidence to be able to find SOMETHING to stretch the line. I still have blank days, but they're much fewer than in the past. Time on the water really is the best teacher, but having some basic info when you get there helps understand what you are seeing. Seeing things you don't understand doesn't help you learn anything. So immersing yourself in videos, magazines, and forums like this will have you hearing and reading things you don't have a clue about. Until that day on the water when the light comes on. You say to yourself "This is what so and so was talking about", and you try something you never had before. It may work, maybe not, but you just put another tool in the box and you will use it again in the future. THAT is what keeps me coming back! When those little things work, it's paradise.

Anytime I'm fishing with my partner, Walt, I have all the confidence in the world that we're going to catch fish. Rarely am I proved wrong.

I have confidence that I will spend money for all the equipment, gas, boat registration, insurance and all that goes along with fishing and in the end it would be a heck of a lot cheaper to go buy some fish for dinner. BUT it sure is fun doing it the harder and more expensive way!!!

Knowing I'm fishing a crappie producing lake makes me confident.

Totally agree. Fishing with any kind of tackle for any kind of fish helps you immeasurably, IMO. If you just do one thing, whether it be fly fishing for trout, or casting for bass, or trolling for walleye, you're limiting yourself. If that's what you like to do, more power to ya. I think you'll be a better overall fisherman if you broaden your horizons, though.
