My take is that we can self impose, but it would take laws to implement. Most average crappie anglers are spring only anglers. Secondly, I'm not smart enough to tell male from female (until it's too late) unless they have the definite black coloring.

If you mess up Mother Nature kicks in to modify the population!!!! I have a test pond on my property!!! The bream come to the bank when I walk up to the waters edge!!! Looking fer a handful of feed. Population got out of balance and the male fry have been getting eaten up!!! All the fish are females that come to the bank 1-4 year old age class!!! Taught me a lot about MAN getting involved in making decisions for Mother Nature???? Best I can recall Jesus and John the Baptist took what they needed!!!!!! Didn't have slot limits or creel surveys!!!

Keep a meal and implement catch and release!!!! Too many folks fish to supplement grocery budget. Also many many folks exceed the bag limit!!!!!! I personally have never exceeded the limit in 56 years on public waters!! If you want to slay the fish go to a Private fishery!!!!!!! Way too Qualified fishermen today having tools to help them and Violators to Realize that fishing will suffer from their GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as the original op question, I have no idea. I would doubt it.

Way back when, Al Lindner coined (at least I heard it from him) the term 'selective harvest'.
Nothing wrong with keeping some fish for the table, but ...........
Especially when fishing spawning beds, keeping day after day limits of only the big ones just
cannot be helpful to maintaining a quality fishery.

    (stepping off my soap box)
    A man's gotta believe in somethin' - I believe I'll go fishin'

Many times people give fish human qualities ......they are nothing like us ......when a male goes away another jumps right in its bed ......I think what many refer to about guarding has nothing to do with fertilized eggs or fry ....it has to do with its my bed until a bigger or badder fish takes it from me .....folks get so confused by injecting human agendas and the warm and fuzzy feelings on fish ....it's pretty silly to think any crappie can identify its own young or even the eggs it fertilized ....think like fish not like human .....you will ketch more and be confused less .....

I don't think anyone is applying human qualities to crappie in this discussion. Your comment comes across a bit pretentious.
