I think they will eat what looks like prey , they are eating machines and hit whatever gets to close to the kill zone within reason . My bud filleted a 2 lb crappie with a 5 inch yellow bass in its stomach , so I never am terribly surprised about them whackin big items and or something non traditional.

I've caught the on Magnum worms when bass fishing.
I think location and presentation is the important thing.

We've caught them on jerk baits, big deep diving crankbaits and a buddy caught one on an Alabama rig.

Maybe I'm wrong about this; but, look at the size of a crappie's mouth. Even a 9" crappie has a mouth that you could practically put your fist in. When I buy minners I get mediums and because they are not always sorted perfectly I've fished with some pretty large ones. So, I'm of the opinion that I want the crappie to see my bait, live or artificial. Again, I'm no expert, just my opinion.

I tend to grab the larger minnow, but I've heard all my life "smallest minnow"
The most popular crappies baits/lures are 1.5-2 in Why?

    16.5 inches 2lbs 14 oz on a buzz bait.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
The two loudest sounds are a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and one that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.
