Frozen water bottles work great to keep the water cool. You also need to keep it aerated either with a spray bar or bubbler. I have a cooler bait tank with a bilge pump spray bar, no standard livewell, that I use for minnows for bass fishing and bluegill for catfishing. Keeping the water cool with frozen water bottles as needed and using the spray bar I can keep them alive all day in the heat of summer. Overloading the tank with too many fish can also be a problem.

We use oxygen in our regular livewell but still have trouble in the summer.
    I can't, I'm fishing.

My livewell is equipped with Power Bubbles aerator. I also save my 1/2gal milk jugs, fill em with water and freeze them. Take a couple with u in a cooler and throw them in the live well to keep the water cool. I do the same for my minnows, except I use 1qt buttermilk jugs for the minnows. Keeping them cool is key.

How cool is too cool? Do you use a thermometer or just chunk em in there when the water starts warming up?

Not only do I not go, when I do go I don't catch any. Saves many that way.

Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.

If tournament fishing and you need to keep them alive a livewell timer with recirculating timer and frozen water bottles. I use frozen 20oz bottles for the minnow cooler and frozen half gallon milk jugs in the main livewell. I keep the extra frozen containers in my main cooler that is full of ice for drinks and food. The vast majority of the time my fish go directly onto ice if we're keeping them for the freezer in the summertime.

Aight. Been there done that. Killed our biggest fish in crappie masters by shocked by it. PUmp fresh water from deep part of lake. from into livewell or cooler then treat it. You will need an aerater hooked to this. Do not introduce fresh water into this during the day. Bring a cooler with ice and throw a handful at a time in the livewell/ cooler.as the ice melts in will introduce oxygen into water also. This seems to work better than frozen bottles. I'm sure there is better ways but this is a proven method also. Good luck

Remember to take it back aboard before taking off as I have before. They are in the same water they came out of and I have done this in the middle of August and they stayed alive.

Good idea unless you're down here where we are. I say this just so that other readers are aware. Gators will chomp the whole thing, and the ride can be a little exciting. Pulling it up to put one in and find a Cottonmouth is inside and has bitten and killed every one, then he slides out the bottom. They do work good, just please remember everything has it's place.
