AWG 6 gauge wire rating ranges from approximately 30 to 55 amps depending upon the number of strands in the wire. The more strands, the less the rating. So in this case, a 30 amp breaker/fuse would be appropriate. For a 50 amp breaker/fuse, you're probably looking at AWG 3 gauge wire.

No you don't. A fuse or breaker is there to prevent overheated wiring from starting a fire. It has nothing to do with protecting the trolling motor. Circuit protection is only needed if the wiring is hidden from view when in use such as run through rigging tubes or under the deck.

I agree about what you said about having nothing to do about the trolling motor. Kind of like sizing a breaker in your house for the coffee maker. Circuit protection is always needed in my opinion, regardless of the case. I do disagree though saying that it is only needed when the wiring is hidden from view. It's always needed in my opinion.

Alright what if I used solid wire and not stranded. Is there a difference?

You bet, a solid AWG 10 gauge is good for 52 amps.

Gary.......why not just use the wire and the battery clips that come on the new TM....its made to be portable.....just clamp motor on boat and clip wires direct to battery....no fuse or breaker required that way. Its going on a jon boat isnt it ?

Here is the deal. A battery can produce bookoo amperage over a short period of time. A 6 ga wire has no chance survival rate without some compromise in a dead short condition without protection. You can take a chance if you want. I do when using my Coleman Crawdad. A fuse is to protect the person (and wire).
