If you have a smart phone there is a Navionics app that I think is $10 or so and you are able to download most major lake contours, at least in our area. Probably not quite as accurate as a pure hand held gps but gets you really close. It also has a camera in the app where if you take a picture of say a fish you caught in that spot it will display on the gps map.

This is exactly why I thought one might be handy for me. Especially fishing mostly by myself. I have a tiller handle motor and if I had a finder on the back with GPS, then I would likely need something on the front linked as well to be able to find the waypoints. With a good handheld I would be able to use regardless if I am driving or up front fishing.

Check out the Garmin GPS72H great unit for the price. I've owned a 72, 76S, and a 76cx. I still have the 72 on my boat.

They will store 500 waypints and you can edit number to name spots . I use letter for creek or bay , north , south east west , and then # on each . Carter Creek West #10 ( ccw010 ) example

    I have a Garmin GPSmap 62s.
It serves me well in the soft and hard water seasons.
