One of our lakes here has a very aggressive HOBO which at times acts as if they own the lake. In recent years they have backed off some. Most do not realize that all they bought was the view. For the most part the owners that I have met where friendly and curtious, but so was I. I will not fish a dock if the owners are present.

Oh boy. Was riding in boat with somebody else today that fishes this pier. Got very heated. Sheriff and game warden involved now. Guess it's good to get this resolved.

First, I agree with your approach. Engagement I think with some people simply is not worth it..better to politely smile and walk away. Okay...boat away:-)

The LEO may address this isolated instance and person. But there may be a bigger issue at hand. It is called ignorance regarding water and fisherman rights. Another option is to see if the local news station will run a special interest story to educate. You get a bigger audience.

I had a unique experience while working as a ranger on a C.O.E. lake here in MS . Fellow put a cable across a cove with a" private " sign hanging from it . lol .I went under the cable and was wearing them out when he came out raising cane . He preceded to tell me he intended to call the game warden and a ranger . I told him to go ahead while I fished . Was he chapped? You bet ! When the warden showed up (a good friend of mine ) the man started saying that he was within his rights . Warden says we need verification from a c.o.e. ranger . Hot head implied he had called one . Warden said waiting on one was not necessary that he would ask the one fishing that brush top right there . lol you should have seen his face . We told him to take down the cable and we never heard from him again . (you can't cure stupid )I can say that :I am no longer a ranger .

I agree you did what I would have done. What I am wondering is why does the land owner even have rights to the pier if he built it in public waters. Seems his property ends at the bank. Let's just say what keeps him from driving 2x4's extending any distance he wants and hooking them to his pier with 1x1's like making a above water fence. Does he have this right to bulld a force field to keep people out. He could leave a path for removing his boat and put a gate with a lock at the end. Now I'm not talking about a gate that would extend in the water that would be more trouble than worth for him.

I would think the pier/dock is considered real property and the land owner owns it as an extension of the property

Piers are governed by Apco when you apply for the permit to build it.

Heard some have run into these crazy dock owners in Arkansas on lakes owned by our Game and Fish commission . They have a permit for a dock but most of the shoreline owned by AGFC . They don't own shoreline or water .

Speaking of who owns what on lake front property here in South Carolina. I have lived on lake Murray for 25 years. I own the land down to the full pool Mark. The lake is owned by sc electric and gas. I paid a fee to build my dock and boat lift They belong to me. Any fishermen can fish the water around my dock but cannot tie up to it or get on it. It is private property. I personally do not care if it is fished or if someone has to get on it to retrieve a lure. But like it is stated not everybody feels like I do. Every state has different laws so call your game wardens if you have problem with a home owner.
