I have used the smallest duo lock snaps and never had any issues with em. Pulled cranks and caught cats and never had any baits lost.
With cranks, I'd probably get the larger size, #3. However, if you are using cranks, you might be better off with a simple spring snap, such as the Duo-Locks. But you should probably know that I lost a dandy of a smallmouth bass that took my jerkbait this past spring. The snap, at the bend, broke! So now I'm searching for an alternative. Apparently the opening & closing of a standard snap creates a wear point at the bend which can lead to a failure. I've never use my recommended snap hooks on crankbaits. But then again, I rarely use cranks for crappie.

Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
used them when i first started LL but soon figured out I can tie a simple loop knot bout as fast....so thats one less thingamabob to keep up with.

I'm seeing a real problem with using a loop knot and crankbaits. Think about it, the crank is moving fast and furiously back & forth as it swims. You'd be hard pressed to convince me that that wouldn't create a wear point in the loop of the line. I believe that's why snaps and snap hooks were created, to reduce breakage from direct ties, such as a loop knot. But I could be all wet!
