Thanks Clint. Appreciate you taking the time to take/post pictures.

Does the transducer being mounted to something lightweight cause problems with imaging when the water surface is a little rough?

I don't know as my boats are all small I don't venture out if it is too rough.

The image is affected by waves bouncing a boat up and down, if only slightly, but a transducer rising & falling or rocking back & forth with every ripple or boat wake that reaches it ... well sir, that's gonna increase the image distortion a bit more. IMHO

Here's an example of a DI unit image of a pile of tree limbs ... that's distorted from incoming boat wake waves :

You might be better served to rig up some kind of suction cup mount for the transducer, or a clamp-on contraption that will hold the transducer below the surface and clamp to the side or transom of the rental boats. Then your transducer won't be as affected by waves, as it would be when freely floating on them.

And if you're gonna be rocked or pushed by waves generated by wind or boat traffic, and you still intend to use a depth finder unit ... you might also invest in a few "marker buoys", so that once you find a likely looking spot you can "mark" it with the buoys and not have to constantly be searching for it with the depth finder.
