I usually fish exclusively at night to beat the day time and weekend warrior anglers. I love catching crappie all night and watch the day time boaters pull up to close to a spot I am on and see me with a stringer of fish off the side of my yak.
My green lights go all the way around as well. I have used the underwater drop lights but I get as much action with the lights around the boat as i do uner the water. I also have a 1000w light I shine on the surface to really draw in the bait. If you ever go to the coast or a pier you can see people fishing in the lights using 2 1000w bulbs shining on water and the trout come in from miles.
Green light penetrates the water better than white. Bugs drawn in are attracted to lights which are outside the boat and no nuisance to me.
Also if you stay out late you want a good battery that will last the night. Get a high amp battery like a 35 amp AGM sealed battery and it will last all night easily and is not that heavy to haul around in a yak. The battery I use powers my Helix 5 SI, my green lights, my navigation light, and my interior lights with very little drain on the battery. When I attach the 100 watt light I get more draw and can use the battery up if i run all night so I run the light sparingly my Hobie PA 14 is lit up!!!
