Have you tried replacing the line on your Zebco? A lot of times the problem is easily solved with fresh line.

If your line is old OR if you have been fishing dirty water, the line gets stiffer and doesn't handle very well.

Have you tried putting fresh line on your Zebco? Fresh line will often cure the symptoms you describe. If you have recently replaced your line, you might have put on line that is too heavy. If you have been fishing dirty water it can sometimes coat your line and make it too stiff for the reel to function properly.

    Sorry for the double post!

Well, I replaced the line and it worked good for about an hour of fishing then started snagging again. I think I'll just buy new reels every couple of years. I guess that's why they're so inexpensive.

From your brief description here's a few things to check.

Have you given it a really good cleaning?? I know I scrub the spools on my 33's at the end of every year and you wouldn't believe the junk that comes off, same for inside the cap and around the line hole. Use a piece of cotton around the inside of the line hole and see if there might be a burr and if so carefully smooth it out. When you have the cone off look underneath it and check to see if the little spring that pulls the line bar in and out is ok.

check all the inside gears and see if the oil and grease has thickened up and gotten dirty. Give it a good scrub and light grease (I use the Zebco grease that you can pick up at Walmart - a little goes a long ways!!) and light oil (I use Rem Oil on all my reels).

I have Shimano spinning reels I've had since 1982 and they're still going strong. My old 33's are the same way good cleaning every year before they get stored with all the drags backed off.

Last thought is are you over lining the reel?? lb. test to big for it? or too much line??

Just a few things to check!

I have been pretty happy with the Shakespeare Synergy Microspin. I just recently replaced my last one with an Okuma Avenger 10B on my 4.5' UL.

    Update.
I purchased a Pfluger Trion and a Zebco 33. The Pfluger appears to be a much higher quality product, but then again it costs almost 3Xs as much as the zebco. The Zebco drag doesn't work. It's either on or off, no in between. I may have gotten a defective one. The Pfluger casts easier and has a smoother crank. I also like the dual line pick ups.
Only time will tell which one will lasts longer but I think I'll be using the Pfluger the most.
