Poll: Vertical jigging pole length

My favorite is a 10' ozark rear seat with a mini reel on it. Its the best pole I ever had in my hand!

I think the heavier stiffer rods reduce the number of bites I detect.

Can you explain this logic? Does a stiffer suspension on your car reduce the number of pot holes you detect?

Not a good analogy.
Crappie can be extremely finicky eaters and will spit out anything that resists being taken. In other words, if they feel resistance while trying to take the bait, they will let it go. IF you have a stiff pole, your pole is providing that resistance.

As for a cars suspension. Most don't understand how a vehicles suspension works and what is designed to do. Rather than explain it here. Below is a link to "How stuff works".

To answer your question. A stiffer suspension allows you to carry more load safely. A cars carrying capacity is a function of the suspension. A trucks suspension is designed to carry heavier loads. Remember the suspension is a function of the frame, springs, shocks, axles and tires. A stiffer rod will allow you to land bigger fish. Similar to a cars suspension, the stiffer the suspension the more load it will carry. As for potholes, and number you will detect- that is a function of the springs/shocks in relation to the load capacity of your vehicle. I could make an argument that a trucks suspension will give a smoother ride than a high end luxury car.

I was a mechanic for 15 years before going back to school, so I do understand how suspensions work.





Anyway, I think you missed the point. You are correct, a stiffer suspension will carry a heavier load because it does not collapse under the weight, thus transferring more shock through the frame and into the cab, especially when not under a load. Same with a stiffer rod. A limber rod will absorb the shock of a light bite, whereas a stiffer rod will transfer that shock all the way up the rod to the handle. When I used Ozarks, my clients missed a lot of bites because they could not feel the bite, even though I could see the rod tip bounce. Now days, if I take an inexperienced client, I hand him a heavier rod. The only thing you have to deal with then is teaching them to have a hair trigger, because as you say, the resistance of the stiffer rod could cause them to spit it. Once they get the hookset down it is game on!

In the fall all I do is vertical jig. I watch the fish on my trolling motor fish finder. So for me a short rod is what I use. For me that is a 5 to 5 1/2 foot rod ultra lite. I want to keep my jig in view of the xducer so this rod length does it. It also is light weight.

10ft Todd Huckabee dipping rod.....set the reel where you are balanced and you can feel a crappie sniff it...lol.....i double dip those all day long and they have plenty of backbone with the perfect tip imho
