Those Shimano IX series reels are what my spider rigging mentor uses, and as much as he uses them in his "fun" fishing plus CUSA tournaments ... I'd have to say they seem to have served him well.

Myself, I have a hodge podge collection of spinning reels & baitcasting reels, most of which were bought on consignment from my local bait store or purchased from members off the Personal Classifieds Forum. The last reel I purchased retail was a Mitchell 308X from BPS, when they were on sale for < $20 (prior to the coming out of the 308Xe). The dozen or so reels that I've acquired since then have been family hand me downs, freebees from friends, or used reels from the Personal Classifieds Forum.

Some like having all their rods/reels match .... same brands, same models ... so the feel & action of each & every outfit is the same. But, I've never had any two outfits be exactly the same, so I'm used to switching from spinning to baitcaster or from light action rods to heavier action ones, back and forth over the course of a days fishing. Hasn't seemed to bother me any, either, now that my rods are placed in a rod holder.

In fact, now that I have a 14' & two 13' rods to use for my spider rig setup, I'm starting them out with baitcast reels ... and if that don't work out for me, I have several spinning reels for backup.

I do not tend to lean towards a high end reel for long lining or spider rigging. I went with the Eagle Claw 10 Cin-10 from Grizzly for about $12 each. Been using most of them for 3 years and we long line about 80% of the time. Have yet to have one go bad. They have a folding handle that folds compact for staorage as well.
