I've caught Bass up to around 6lbs on 4lb test mono on UL equipment. The trick is to not depend on the drag system, but play the fish using the "back wind" method. I leave the anti-reverse on until I realize I have a large fish on, then turn it off & wind forward or backward according to how the fish gives & takes line. I keep just enough rod bend pressure on the fish, as is needed to keep the fish under control and not allow any slack to get in the line. I also use my arms as extensions to the short UL rod, so as to make it "longer" ... giving me more shock absorption, and to keep the fish from bending it beyond its capacity.

    ... cp

Unlike CP, I prefer to use the drag. Either method should help you land fish.

The use their own brand since the entire company name now is TTI-Blakemore so they are True Turn Hooks and are suppose to bend if hung up. So agree set drag to give before the line breaks or bends the hook. However I use reels that are not cheap and have excellent drag systems.

I caught a bass around 2 pounds the other day on a 1/8 oz beetle spin. Thinking it was a good crappie I was reluctant to set the hook hard in fear I would tear the lips off. I suspect you are losing bass for the same reason. Bass need a harder hook set but we tend to soften up some for the paper mouths.

Love it! I caught this crappie with my smallest lure. I was surprised. I did catch a striped bass off the roadrunner though.

Just curious what size Roadrunner are you using? I use them spring and fall, but only the 1/32 Oz marabou type! We do really great using them and have for a very long time.

1/16.... I was shocked when I snagged this crappie. It was so small I thought I would never catch a fish with it. Lol

Couple years ago, fishing a pink 1/16 RoadRunner tipped with a crawler on a light action 5' rod with 4# test caught and boated a 30+ pound shovel head. Not sure who was worn out the most - me, the catfish, or my fishing buddy. We had been catching nice walleye all day no catfish, no crappie, no carp, a couple smallies so we were both convinced I had a giant walleye. It did not feel like a walleye but, nothing that day had threatened to break my rod or make the drag sing. ... usually they dont make my arms cramp.

For the last several years, my go to jigs are 1/48, 1/32 and the occasional 1/16 I do keep a few 1/8 and 1/4 for bass fishing with grub tails. There are many days where I stick with the 1/48 because that is the only size that fish will run with.

I would be checking my knot tie. This is usually the weak link. I set my drag at about 50% line strength with a fish scale. A little higher than most, but I get hung up a lot in brush. I mostly use light wire hooks when minner rigged and do not finesse a hangup.
