Welcome - I am retired military (US Army) and now living west of the lakes (Kentucky & Barkley).
From the shore Dux has the right idea about going to the tailwaters. At the Kentucky and Barkley dams there are fishing piers on on both sides of the rivers and other places where fishing is very good. And in addition here on the lakes there are many marinas that rent fishing boats at very reasonable rates. We are going into the Off-Season and lodging rates will be going down. You are only two hours from some of the best opportunities for fishing. If you do decide to come this way make sure you drop a note on the Kentucky Forum and you may get a idea where to go and possibly an invite to meet up with some of the locals.

awesome, thanks for the info guys, im going to plan a weekend trip to the Kentucky lake, Dove season starts September 1st, so after that I'll be down there sometime. stupid question, but I've never fished on a dam before, I'm assuming "tailwaters" is the water right after a dam? thanks again for welcoming me and all the great information on this great site!

Yes - the tailwaters is the area right behind the dam. Both the Kentucky & Barkley dam are electrical generators so there is always flow, albeit at this time of year, very little. But as the winter approaches they will be lowering the lake level to Winter Pool and the flows will increase as will the fishing opportunities.

Not my part of the state, but fishing the tailwaters sounds like good advice. Never know what you will pull from that kind of setting. Any backwaters off of the Ohio river should hold fish also. Good Luck & thanks for your service.

If you are off duty, come to the Kentucky Shindig in October. Wiskers puts on a goos show (in more ways than one). Meet a few folks and someone will take you out in their boot. Might not catch any fish, but that is not necessarily the point of the gatherings. Some of us from Tn will be there. I plan to eat all Wiskers fish my belly will hold.
