Used to catch them in a slough that we used to duck hunt in. We carried a hand gun with rat/snake shot for snakes and grinnel. If my partner caught one I would shoot it and if I caught it he got the honors. If they fell off the hook into the boat without being shot they would thrash around in the boat with those teeth for a very looong time.

Caught them when fishing with my Uncle Bob when I was a boy growing up in West Tennessee. We used to fish the Forked Deer and Obion River. Uncle Bob would throw them up on the bank because he said they were trash fish. You would walk by them 15-20 minutes later and they would still be moving. I used to think it had to be the toughest fish in the river. Great fighters!

My Grandaddy grew up where Ky Lake is now, near Sledd Creek area. He said they use to seine for trotline bait and said grinnell minnows were absolutely the best because you could hook then most anywhere and they would stay alive for days on the hook.

First one I ever remember seeing was practicing for a bass tournament on West Point Lake in Ga/Al. Buddy hooked one on a plastic worm that had to be 10 pounds. It fought like a bear and just as I got ready to net it, my buddy yelled NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too late!! I thought it was a bass and swung it into the boat. It ripped the net apart and broke a rod or two before we finally beat it to death with a paddle. I have not netted another one.

I live in West Tn. Where did you fish the Forked Deer. I'm about 30 minutes from the ramp in 54 in Brownsville. Never even put in in that river. Would be nice to have somewhere else to go catch a crappie.

Grinnles will bite you like a dog too. Supposed to eat good but I don't know.

having bass fished a lot I've caught my share of cypress trout. I keep a pair of pliers on the front deck and when I catch one I get a death grip on the lower lip with the pliers and twist until the lower lip comes into. then I turn it back after getting revenge for it tearing up my spinner bait.
