use thicker material so if you do fall on one when the lid is open then you might bruise instead of cut yourself. Never mind how I know this

go to a truck repair shop and get a couple of mud flaps and cut to fit will work good , just dont get the black rubber ones

Id use corigated aluminum or stainless. just run some weather strip around the outside of it to cover any sharp edges and slide it in.

I made one out of a plastic cutting board from wal-mart. Drilled some 1" holes in it. Works great
