That would probably be safer than working with lead, but the melting point of aluminum is over 1200 degrees. So a simple melting pot wouldn't work for that. The other concern would be the density and weight of aluminum. You'll have to let us know how that turns out for you. Good luck.

Started casting when I was 11 with my Uncle. One thing I like about my cast iron pot is that it has a lid!!! I try and dry tire weights as much as possible but even in the clip area salt can pop too!!!!

Don't know why folks smoke their molds I've never had to do it, and I cast alot. Split shot and any sinker less than 1/2oz. in Vermont have to be tin/non-lead, the split shot are a pain to pour in tin but I haven't tried the sinkers yet, with pouring jigs they're just cheaper to buy. If you're worried about any type of grime or any lead popping you can get a pizza pan to set on top when your weights start to melt, just a little extra protection.

I obtained the melting pot and molds from Barlowes Tackle online. They can be found at FISHING TACKLE for bass fishing, crappie, walleye, trout.Fishing lures, fishing hooks, lead molds. BARLOWS FISHING TACKLE.

Good luck with your process! I'm picking up a 5 gallon bucket full of wheel weights every week. So I now have around 100 lbs of lead available. That will sure produce a lot of sinkers and jigs!

Thanks for the info. Ill have to check around at some tire shops and see if I can get some lead for free. Have you tried using an old battery?

No, I'm wanting to risk the dangers with extracting lead from an old battery. I'm getting plenty of lead from a tire shop now.

One note about casting split shot... Wheel weight lead might be too hard. Split shots need very soft lead or you won't be able to close them without hurting your fingers.
    Don't worry, catch crappie.

I'll be sure to check that out to be sure it's not too hard to use the split shot. I hadn't thought about that. Thanks!
