I enjoy the people I fish with and love the challenge and enjoy the results of my catch. It is usually peaceful and calms my spirit. Other than that, heck, it's just a plain ole fun time.

It reminds me of my grandpa (Poppa). He started me crappie fishing many years ago with a cane pole and a minnow. Over the years we fished together we developed a strong bond I still fish the same lake the same spots and the same way he taught me. There's so many memories I have of sculling his old boat around cypress knees and him telling me "put you bait right there and catch that big slab crappie." and more times than not that's exactly what happened. I don't have any kids but I get to share the love of fishing and the knowledge with my nephew and I hope when he's all grown up he remembers me like I remember my poppa.

I had fished for years and never had even heard of crappie. I had been catching sunfish, perch and catfish for a good 20 years of fishing. One day a friend of mine was talking about fishing and mentioned crappie. For a long time I called them
crap...pee. He told me how much bigger they were than sunfish. I couldnt believe that for years I never heard of such fish. I honestly didnt believe him. So I began to search online... I found this forum and began the hunt for crappie. Sure enough, I luckily have a close fishing hole that has always had a great crappie population. The first year I only caught maybe 2 or 3, but each year I seem to catch more. Crappie has actually changed my life in a way. I bought a bigger boat, fish a lot more, I have shown others how to catch crappie, have had crappie fish fries, and now I try for other species. Crappie are one of my favorite. I think the size of them and how deep they go intrigue me....they also seem to be mysterious in sorts. How many times have you heard someone say, "what?" when they first hear crappie?!

Thats awesome man. My grandfather taught me as well. He is still with us but im not sure for how long. He made me promise him when i was young that i would take him fishing one last time when he wasnt able anymore. His heart is about gone and i just cant get him in the boat one last time. I keep telling him he's making me break a promise. Hopefully it will sink in soon.

Hunting and fishing are part of my earliest memories. I remember lots of camping trips that centered around these two activities. My dad and grandpa ran trot lines but didn't pole fish much except to take me and my cousins. My grandma, on the other hand, was a bluegill (bream) fishin woman. Fishing took a back seat to everything else during my teenage years then Paul and I started fishing together when we were dating. We stayed in a cabin and fished on our honeymoon and have tried to camp/fish on every anniversary. We didn't start crappie fishing until we had spent too much $$ trying to be bass fishermen. About 17 years ago, a friend turned us on to crappie fishing and we've been hooked ever since. It's a lot more fun and satisfying!
