Never used thermacell, never needed to and to be honest not sure its worth the money, especially since my current methods are cheap and highly effective.
Sweat has very little to do with it. What initially draws in mosquittos is the carbon dioxide that you expell while breathing, the heavier you breathe the further away tehy can sense you. Once they pick up on the carbon dioxide they zero in on your motion, and when your sweating your body is in motion. Its not the sweat, the sweat is the result of your activity and breathing.
My number one bug deterent is campfire smoke. The smoke disorientates the bugs senses and they avoid it. I build a campfire and stand in teh smoke, letting the smoke saturate my clothes. The scent alone is enough to keep the bugs away.
I have a theory related to soda, in that the bugs, especially bees can pick up on the sweet odor comeing from your body after you drink soda. I avoid soda on campouts and even a couple days prior. My only supporting evidence is 15 years as a Scout Leader, watching the kids who drink soda verses those that don't. Seems every kid who drinks soda always has problems with bugs, and when tehy quit during the campouts, the bug problem stops.
When not camping, I use 100% DEET in a hand pump spray bottle. Recently I found Coleman makes a Citronella Candle that looks similar to there old style lanterns. They call it Coleman Citronells Candle Lanetern. Label says it will burn for 40 hours, based on my use so far, I'm betting it will last a lot longer. First time I have used citronella, so the jury is still out on how effective it is at detering bugs. Not sure if it's teh smell or the smoke that is more effective. Maybe it is a combination of both. Similar to campfire smoke and not drinking soda.
