That all depends on a number of things. How clear is the water and how deep as well as how far are you needing to bring the fish from. If the water is clear and you know you are anchored in a spot with fish holding cover near then not much light will be needed to get their attention. If there is a full moon you are competing with you will need as much light as you can get and it still may not be enough. Typically guys want as much light as they can get.

I own an Evening Secret. Really all they are is the Green Magnet. About the samething as a Hydraglow. Has a 4 ft bulb in which I tie a 5 pound iron dumbell weight to. I will say this you do not have to buy minnows. In 20 minutes after turning it on most of the time there will be more minnows circling that light than you can shake a stick at. Seriously. Looks like the eye wall of a hurricane around that light. I just used it 3 times last year after I got it. The thing about these 195.00 lights is the longevity of the bulb. They suppose to last 10,000 hours if I remember correctly. I don't think the Bass Pro 20.00 lights are rated that high. Although you may do just as well with those lights, but I have my doubts. I read somewhere where someone was saying to use the green light the first 30 minutes to draw the minnows in then cut it off and use the white lights to keep them around on each end of the boat and then fish in the middle of the two white lights in the dark shadow edges which will converge in the middle of the boat if the white lights are spaced right on each end of the boat. It is a cool looking light in the water. You will think the Hulk was going to come out of the water any minute with that green glowing light. You would'nt like me when I'm angry HA HA ! I will give this a try this year and let ya'll know the outcome.

This site, crappie.com, has an article all about night stalking for slabs too. They give a lot of tips on how to set up you boat for a successful night on the water.

another resource I found... go to http://fishinglightsetc.com/ they sell their own fishing lights and the price is pretty decent - and the bulbs are replaceable.
I think their 50Watt halogen bulb only draws just over an amp.

Even if you don't buy anything from them, their website has a lot of good info on setting up for night fishing for slabs.

That Aurora light that the fella was talking about looks like something to try. From reading about it, the price seems reasonable based on size, durability, and low power consumption. I'd want to hear a lot of people talking about how great it is before I'd buy one though.

Evening Secret? No thank you, I'll go and buy 8 of the cheapos at BPS or 6 of the AquaStar Combos, or even maybe one of the Aurora's with that money instead.

Wattage is a function of current vs voltage. A 50 watt lamp operating from 12 volts will draw just over 4 amps of power. No matter what anyone says their light does, Ohm's law remains constant. That isn't to say all 50 watt lamps are the same, but their power use is. lumen's of light produced per watt is a much better rule to use. Current state of the art LED's are now producing more than 200 lumen's per watt surpassing even compact fluorescents in efficiency. The Aurora produces just over 9 watts for 3100 lumen's at 750 milliamps. A standard 100 watt Halogen will produce around 1700 lumens and use 8.3 amps of power from your battery.

In summation after my personal use so far and reading others post. I would try the Bass Pro Shop version to see if it draws the minnows in really good. If it does then I would go with that, but I have my doubts. The Evening Secret, The Green Magnet, Hydraglows are quality lights that produce alot of light and draw alot of minnows. That is the principle in night fishing any how, draw the baitfish in to draw the crappie in to feed. Does it do this ?, yes it certainly does. Just because it has a hyped up internet ad that sounds like a TV infomercial doesn't neccessary make it a scam. Alot well known crappie fishermen endorse the Hydraglow and nothing is said because it doesn't have the cheesy ballyhooed internet informercial. This internet informercial is what is turning off most people. The Evening Secret is just as good in quality. Automatically your conscience says it's scam because of the hype. Folks it is a quality light like the Hydraglow. The guy is just wanting to sale his share of Green Magnets maybe just going about it in a cheesy way. I know personally that his product is a Green Magnet. If you pulled up www.greenmagnetfishing.com at first instead of The Evening Secret website I bet most opinions would not be as critical. Kind of like this do you want a Murray or a John Deere to cut grass with. Where a Murray has its place it is not a John Deere. Sameway a Bass Pro Shop green light is not a Evening Secret AKA Green Magnet or a Hydraglow, you pay for what you get. Just started night fishing for crappie last year so there is alot of testing to be done through trial and error. Have no regrets about buying it, because I could have sent it back. You got 90 days to return it. Tightlines!

After alot of digging, think I might go with the aurora. Like the size, low batt. draw, and its not too terribly expensive.

I agree, the evening secret is a scam, as the guys mentioned, there are a lot of green lights out there,
and they are all cheaper than the magic.

BPS also has the green light stick in 15" length, I think they're $15 Ken Kinser and I were fishing Potaka the other night with them and they work pretty good.
easy on batteries just add about 6oz. of weight to them and drop them in.
