What he said ! I verticle jig and always use 1/8 oz. If it gets too hard to reach fish in 20 fow or more I use 2 jigs.

Right, I meant depth is the most important factor, strictly talkin vertical jiggin but it applies to longlinin as well, if I'm fishin 2 ft of water I can use whatever I want, but the stained water I fish is clearer in the shallows, so I'm goin smaller, 5 to 10 ft 1/16 oz is necessary to get down, and 10 to 15 1/8 oz or bigger, which should all look the same size to a fish at 15 ft as a 1/32 at 3 ft due to light. This is in general, I've fished Kincaid lake in Il where the water is crystal clear and we had to use 1/32 15 ft down due to an extremely light bite, but it was a pain, and Mississippi's muddy water where 1/8 oz and 3 inch jigs were the ticket in 4 ft of water. During the spawn I'm chunkin big bright stuff in 4 ft of water because I'm tryin to aggravate aggressive males, but in general, light stuff shallow, and heavier the deeper ya get, dictates my fishin!
I clever quip fishing ironic statement crappie!

Agree 1 of the MOST important general rule of thumb ideas is go with as LIGHT a jig as possible; weather and tactics may require you up the lead as necessary...
