    Nice catch!

I catch them (northern pike) all the time while I'm trolling for crappie. With four lines out you'd think they'd hit my large bait rig (8lb test, medium light rod, 3" grub, etc). But no; they always hit my ultralight that has a 1-1/2" tube and 4lb test.

Consider hooking 1 on an ultra light pole like pulling the pin off a grenade and watching the handle flip off...in about 3-5 seconds you`re gonna see the water FLY and just as likely watch the line go "PHINK !" and go limp...

But you know what has surprised me? The northerns I've caught have fought like the devil for about 10-15 seconds, then it's like reeling in an old sneaker; like they tire out very quickly. Of course, they perk back up again when you go to grab them by the gills to retrieve your jig (no more trying to net a pike with my bass/crappie net; they're way to big for that and just jump right out of the net). I've only had a few bite through the line. Most have had the hook very near their lip. I always have my drag set very light out of habit so I've probably avoided a few line breaks that a heavier drag would have caused.

On my home lake the rule is catch-and-release all gamefish (northern pike and largemouth bass) so I've never gotten to taste them, but they're supposed to be pretty good.

    Nice catch! Good eats too.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

    How do they eat
    Luke:5
6And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
