Dave (AKA Gator) and Darlene Roach of Hernando won the Big Momma Tournament at Grenada on September 17, 2010 with a monster slab weighing 2.41#s. Dave said the day started out with trouble, first the trailer came loose from their truck before they left their yard, then about 20 miles south of Hernando a trailer tire blew out destroying the rim and barely saving the bearings. This delayed them approximately 1 hour.
It was 7:30am before they launched the boat at the South Greysport Landing. They pulled up to Choctaw Landing with about 20 boats fishing this area. After nearly an hour of fishing without a bit, Darlene told Dave to fish like he would when he’s fishing by himself. So Dave moved out to a flat near the river channel. Before he could get his spider-rigging poles out Big Momma hit one of his 3.5” minnows. While pulling in the fish he broke his new B’n’M Slo-Troller pole, Jack Wells, President of B’n’M Poles is sending him a complete set of poles.
Dave said he grabbed the line and reached for the net. Finally netting the fish, he could not believe his luck. Dave said this was his 1st tournament, 1st time fishing Grenada, and 1st win. The Roach’s are hooked. They’re fishing from a 1981 Bass Tracker with a 30hp, so we see it’s not the boat it’s the fishermen.
The $2,000 they won came in handy, Dave said he didn’t tell Darlene but after paying the entry fee, buying two t-shirts he had $30 left to buy gas the following week. Now that’s what I call making a good investment. Dave, I’ve got to tell you, this tournament fishing is like going to the casino, winning only makes you get hooked. Dave and Darlene plan to join us October 22 at Arkabutla for the 1st tournament in our 2011/2012 season.
