I clever quip fishing ironic statement crappie!
Anything curly tail is my best bet too. I prefer black and natural colors.

It was years ago, but the largest crappie I ever caught came from a farm pond while I bass fishing. The bait I was using was a small Johnsons silver minnow with a plastic trailer fished on top along the weeds in the shallows. I had caught a decent bass, about 17 inches, put it on a stringer and continued fishing planning to release it later. Then the crappie bit and I brought it in and knew it was a nice black crappie, but when I started to put it on the stringer I got a surprise. The crappie was as long as the bass, was about as thick as the bass, and had a much deeper body. I released the bass, took the crappie home and put it into a tub of water to show my parents. I carried it to a local country store, weighed it on the certified scales, and it weighed two and three quarter pounds. It was released back into the pond which froze over for an extended period that winter. When it thawed there were several dead fish floating in the water including a large black crappie. Boy, I hated that, but I could not afford to mount it back then. It was a beautiful fish with the large black spots.
For small ponds I would also use just a minnows on a #4 hook as my first choice. After that I will throw Baby Shads or Snake River's baits at them. Chartreuse and Black is my go to color combination.
