I had one buried in the middle of my thumb last winter and I was by myself, the best way was like others have said take a pliers and just push it on around all the way through until the tip and barb are out then snip it off and back it out. It really didn't hurt that much the worst part was just thinking about doing it, the longer you wait the harder it will be. Just do it! Only took about 15 seconds and didn't bleed much, went right back to fishing.

Looks like it's all been covered here pretty well except for 1 point I didn't see mentioned...
The purpose of holding the shaft downwards before removal is to attempt to approximate the angle of the barb the same coming out as it was going in. You get that barb tearing skin on the way out and I don't care how fast you pull it'll hurt!
The last one I had was buried in the thumb bone. It was not coming out with fishing line. I finally got it out with a pair of pliers using all the strength I could muster and it popped out. I was amazed afterwards at how much pain it caused while in the bone and how little pain coming out and afterwards healed up just fine with no pain and no infection.

So after all this talk, it appear's like I'm not the only bub to get a hook in the finger, and thanks for all the good info. I'm sure we all got a little out of it, Except of course the Ole Duckhunter it's never happen to him cause He's the WISE ONE...... JUST A LITTLE HUMOR

A couple weeks ago while fishing with the wife she ended up with a treble hook in her big toe! 5 minutes after I mentioned she should watch out for the rigged rods while being barefoot in the boat! And yes I said "told you to watch out". I only had rods rigged with 8lb test line and wanted something stronger to pull out the hook. I ended up finding a steel leader from a previous trip and used it to pull the hook. Worked like a charm and is now part of my first aid kit. The wife said it did not hurt when I pulled the hook out and we kept fishing.

As a further note he had side cutters and clipped the treble from the crank bait before pulling it out.

Ever since that happened I've kept a pair of side cutters as part of my equipment on the boat. Fortunately, so far, I've only used the side cutters to clip braid which works very well for me.

In that video if it was me removing the hook I would have first cut the treble off the spoon and also clipped the other two points just to make sure those other to points wouldn't have impaled something else in the process of removing the hook.

Here is a picture of the process showing the forces needed in using this technique from here. Fishhook Removal - June 1, 2001 - American Family Physician
Yes this one works right, Push down on the eye and pull the string. Took a bunch of hooks out this way over the years, after paying $50. back around 1972 to get one out at the hospital one night.

If you cut the treble off first make sure you leave as much hook sticking out as possible. One year my friend had a treble in his knee he cut the one hook off the treble but cut it too short, while we were trying to rig up to pull it out the whole thing disappeared into his knee under the skin, we were screwed then, trip to the hospital. It is better to just cut off the other hooks on the treble and leave the main hook intact.

Not really an answer to the OP question, but lesson learned from being hooked just the same.

Several years ago had my poles in my van; laying down the drivers side with the reels to the rear of the van. I ran into the grocery store to get some ice for the cooler and came out, jumped in the van....

Scream, holler, cuss!! OMG, I had sat HARD down onto the equipped end of the pole right in the drivers seat! That hook was in my butt and I couldn't move. I was hiked over the drivers seat, holding on for dear life on the steering wheel screaming my fool head off.

Luckily, a good friend heard me screaming. As people were gathering about my van I think I yelled at her to "Come get this thing outta my butt!"

Lesson learned: Put the reels to the front of the car!

Exactly. I used needle nose to get a Bandit out of my left index finger by the nail last summer. Had to get a 2lbs LMB off of the other hook first. Him thrashing around hurt worse than backing the hook out.

you are north of me so that makes you a yankee. how hard is it for a yankee to understand that a hook is for fish not the fisherman? when you learn that you will not hook yourself anymore.
