Bottom bouncers are a great way to get your crank down low, but be prepared to loose some cranks and terminal tackle. An homemade rig much like a lindy rig is another great method to get your bait down, utilizing a walking sinker. The most effective for the all around performance, cost and prevention of losing baits has been to use a three way rig. If you are using 6 pound test for your main line, use a dropper of 18 inches of 2lb test and add a couple large split shots to it. That way the split shots either slip off the dropper line, or the 2lb will break before the 6lb in the event of snagging up the weight. Cranks are expensive, splitshots... not so much.

if you got the time/patience/minor equpitment...
i add some lead shotgun pellets inside to get them deeper. I use small shot(#8) because it takes very little weight to go from floating, to suspending to sinking.
a drill press, 5/64 bit, some shot and super glue is all you need.
Also play around with where you place the shot, makes alot of difference on the action, especially if the bait is chambered(nearly all ive tinkered with are)
Great for cast and retrieve fishing beyond the 6' mark. for trolling, i do like all the above post with a heavy sinker and a leader from a 3-way.

The adding of shot is a great method as well, and with some of our plastic bodied baits also adds a bit of a rattle as well. I believe you can still get the sticky back lead "dots" that you add carefully to suspend or dive your bait as well.

light line seems to work best for me keeping down where I am targeting. Weight above the swivel works best for me.
