    Default Brakes For Spider Rigging????????

I have been told that the best way to rig is with the wind, as the fish sit in the water facing the wind. Wanting to experiment with trying to slow the boat down and going with the wind. I have heard that some drag chain, I want to try this but have no idea where to start with size wise, I know it has many variables, but just a starting point is what I am looking for, 19' deep V boat. 5/16, 3/8 chain? How long of a chain do you drag? I just have no idea how much drag a chain would produce, I assume that also the bottom being mud or rock would make a big difference also. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this!!!! Mark

I've used the drift sock on windy days and even when going with the wind I stillhad to use the trolling motor to move fast enough. (.3mph).

a drift sock is a lot easier than a chain, look on chart for your size boat then get the next size larger. i like cabelas better than bass pro shop thats just my opinion.

Why not use a 5 gallon bucket with some holes drilled in it tied on a rope?

I use a drift sock at times i wish i had two or a chain. Ive been told that you need one foot of chain for every foot of boat so if you have a 19' boat get a 19' chain and tie a rope to the end rope needs to be, im just guessn bout 40'
    Hope this helps

because after you lift that bucket of water into the boat a couple times you'll go buy a drift sock

gotta agree with ya Harold, works fine for me, 2 buckets, 1 on each side of the boat roped off my 2 front cleats so they reach only back to the middle of the boat they stay out of the way and affect speed greatly. As far as lifting them in/out of the water don't really need to do that. When you stop to retrieve a fish they're only on a couple feet of line they just fall straight down below the boat, no need to lift them in/out until you're done for the day or moving to another spot.

That's for trolling. For drifting, I like to drift parallel with the wind using my TM to keep the front of the boat turned sideways so I wouldn't use them and then would need the sock.

Why drill holes in the bottom though? Would that create more resistance in the water against the boat versus no holes in the buckets? Where's the scientists on here?
