Skip, "G", Majflyboy, Satdoc1 have given you pearls here, it's very good info. I'm sure some of this is trial and error, or a pearl passing. It's golden my friend and will save you some hardships.

I have a 798 up front with the transucer mounted on the terrova. I would NEVER have done that if I didnt' already have an 898SI on the console. If youve never used SI before it may be hard to grasp but you want to use that unit for the feature you bought it for, SIDE IMAGING. You can get a BETTER unit for down imaging for LESS money to put up front. You wont use SI much up front. You cant keep a straight line long enough to get a good feel for the bottom because everytime you SLIGHTLY turn the motor you get distortion, so you just dont use it much up there. You WILL use the down imaging and you WILL use the GPS, but you can get that in other units for less money.

Once you start using SI you will probably find that you use it as a searching tool. Looking for piles, drop offs, structure, fish shcools, all of which are easy to spot....IF you are going 3-5 MPh in an ABSOULUTE STRIAGHT LINE. If you aint doin that, it gets really hard to use properly.

No doubt in my mind, put it on the console with the ducer on the transom. Use it to SEARCH and you will be getting your best bang for the buck.
    Hope this helps.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.

I run my side scan on the console, I don't really need it up front.
