I find when the pressure is falling the big fish are less timid. After a front when the skyes are blue bird stay home.
Don't know if this really means anything, but I always regard it as a
good omen if on the way to the lake, I have to dodge a whole bunch
of squirrels darting across the road - or deer and turkeys. Maybe it just
puts me in a good mood to see them, and I fish harder?

I agree with the falling barometer.....When that barometer is dropping so fast you can feel it , you can load up on crappie and bass.....
i never have luck with a east wind or if they are pulling the water real hard.my favorite is if it is about 65 light rain and they are backing the water up
A friend of mine, that is an excellent jig fisherman, always stops by the bait shop before he goes out to jig fish his brushpiles. He said that he walks back and looks into the minnow vat and he pays attention to how the minnows are located in relation to the surface.
If they are near the surface he usually finds his fish suspended or just on top of his brush. He says if they are towards the middle or bottom of the tank he usually finds them tighter to the brush or bottom.
Old wive's tale or what ever you want to call it the man catches huge crappie and lots of 'em!
CATCH A BIG-UN
is ... if I don't go, I don't catch anything. And if I do go ... I usually catch something (even if it isn't what I'm fishing for) :D
I go when I can ... and conditions permit - without regard to Baro pressure, wind direction, Solunar tables, planet alignments, psychic predictions, or what other critters are/are not doing. I get to go so infrequently now, as it is, that if I waited for the conditions to be right on my day off .... I'd be lucky to go, once a year, if at all !! :D
Do I think those "sayings" have any merit ? Sure I do ... even the one about the cows has "some" truth to it. Do I think they work ALL the time ... NOPE - I've busted all of them, at one time or another. WHY ? ... because no one "saying" is, in and of itself, the only factor involved in the equation. Which takes me back to my personal philosophy on going fishing ..... GO when you can, conditions permitting, and ENJOY yourself ... whether you catch anything, or not. AND ......... luck2ya ....... cp
Wind out of the West---fishin is the best.
Wind out of the South---blows the bait in their mouth.
Wind out of the East---fishin is the least.
Wind out of the North---dont venture forth.
Pretty good advice I would say.
any warm ups and cool downs can be tough during the winter fishing .I like a steady north wind 5 to 10 ,for a couple days slam the crappy .
during the spawn a north wind will jack em up good .push em off the banks, and strong warm south wind and it is party time get the watertemp up.
Some wind
Air warmer than the water
Falling barometer
Overcast
go no matter what you have to do
Sorry for my Crappie attitude.
