Never fished with them. There was no Crappie here in the Fifties. They began stocking Crappie in Late Fifties and early Sixties in Impoundments for flood control and generating Power. They eventually spread into Creeks and Rivers. BB

we buy the rosy reds from feb. til it gets hot, they sell em at the bait stores round reelfoot, they're much more active and resilient than regular shiners, my method for baiting them is grab one, slap it hard on my leg, stuns em long enough to get em on the hook, they're slick as snot and extremely fiesty....

my old man will take a floating jig head and put it on a 2 foot leader off an 1/8 ounce split shot, and hook a rosy red upside down from the nose through the jaw, the rosy will go nuts trying to right itself against the floating jig head, he says the fish can't resist it!!

I saw some neon food coloring in the cabinet the other day, wonder how a few drops in the minnow bucket would affect them?

good idea, will oil based paint work on a shiner?? I've got some satin mauve left over from my kitchen, maybe just dip their noses in it?

I think the food coloring will work. It would be similiar to this (Minnow Magic Coloring System | Field & Stream). I have used this in the past but quit due to the hassle. Turn the bucket over in the boat and you now have colored carpet. I did catch some good fish on the pink minnows but did not see a reel difference compared to regular minnows.
