Clean bottom. I am sure there is a variety of bottoms they will spawn on and there are probably preferences too. However, one thing I do know is they clean their beds bigtime. Check out this hawg and it's beaten up tail.
Can someone tell me what type of a bottom crappie spawn on?
Is it usually sand or mud or rock bottoms?
The areas I fish have just two types mostly. Sandy or muddy with weeds

Gravel or sandy bottom around here and they fan it clean. I troll thru the shallows and look for white spots about a foot to a foot one half in diameter. That is their beds. I cast past the bed and pull a jig back thru the bed. I love to watch the Crappie and how they watch the jig as it comes towards their bed.
DO-GOODER EXTRADINAR :p
Around here in Ky. Lake they spawn alot on pea gravel. Helps if it has some brush or stumps on it.

The lakes we fish have mostly soft mud bottoms, so that's what they get. Sometimes the tails still get pretty torn up. - Roberta

Up here in Pa., they mainly use wood. Dont have a lot of weed / sandy bottoms, so they use what they can.
