No matter how much they change, they lost my fishing business long time ago. I say Academy all the way. Wal-mart care less about the quality, all they are in is profit and not the customer.

Some Wal*Marts carry products that other Wal*Marts don't...there are regular Wal*Marts, and then there's the SuperCenter Wal*Marts. Corporate does in fact makes the stocking decisions, as well as the individual store's Marketing Team...but there are ways to get certain products stocked on your local Wal*Mart's shelves...

BTW, Wal*Mart DOES carry Crappie Niblets...perhaps you need to peruse more closely what is on the shelf.

Most of the fishing stuff in walmart is just the same as other places, but do not buy the walmart brand hooks and jigheads. Im not sure what name they market them under but they are weak! The weakest of all are the jigheads with red hooks. You can break the eye off with your finger nails.

I'm not sure that is completely right. I think the individual stores have some discretion. I can go to the WM in Batesville, Searcy, Ash Flat or Newport and they all have at least some different stuff in their sporting goods department. Unfortunately Batesville seems to have the least and worst.

I stopped at a Walmart Sunday on my way to visit my dad in the hospital. Wanted to grab some fishing magazines to read or leave for him. No bass or crappie fishing, but they had Pacific Coast Fishing and Iowa Game and Fish. Nothing against the Pacific Coast or Iowa, but the Walmart is in Indiana. Somebody gets paid for that kind of work.

Wal-Mart can carry all the "fishing items" they want but will never be good at selling them because it's just a "segment" of their products. Independents who specialize in sales service and bait can better fill your needs and order items in demand at the times needed. I went to a yard sale last week that had more usable tackle than Wally! But what the heck, we all have the means to click-order-ship anything to our door right? But it sure is nice to walk in, be greeted "can I help you find something today"? and feel like a valued customer and shopping online is not as fun as diggin in a big bin of closeouts!

I agree that Walmart is a good one stop shop. I tend to go there is I just need a couple of little items like picking up another pack of sinkers. If I'm needing a large enough load of supplies then I just go online or to bass pro(1 hour away).
