I was going to load my boat up on the trailer and got to talking to an older gentleman and he told me where he was staying on the white river and I told him while we were loading his truck that my house was just up river, When I loaded my boat I noticed a pole by the ramp and thought it must be his ,I took it to his house and he hadn't missed it yet but wanted to pay me and I wouldn't let him. He then told me it was his birthday. Pay it forward the only right thing to do.

I was fishing the docks at Smithville lake a few days ago. There were 2 older gents fishing across from me and I couldn't help hearing them talk about their friends and the medical procedures they have had. After about 15 minutes of hearing them one told the other" D*** we're getting old! let's go get some coffee."
Was kinda like watching the movie "Grummpy old Men."

years and years and years ago, I belonged to an organization a lot like what we have here with regard to a culture of doing kind things just for the sake of doing something kind... That organization is still around today, and it has a slogan that goes like this: "Do a good turn daily".

Not sure how many of y'all were ever boy scouts, but the type of people here in this thread make a great example for the youngsters of today for sure.
Keep up the good work fellers!!!!

    Awesome thread guys.
Week before last someone on the MS board lost a trolling rod overboard not realising it until they got back to the ramp and not knowing where it had been lost. They got on the board and announced it in hopes that maybe another member had been fishing Sardis that day and found it. As it turned out the cousin, I believe, of a member had in fact been on Sardis this day and found the rod and reel floating. The trolling rod and baitcasting reel were shipped to the owner that day. I was pleased with this turnout, just reinforced what I like to believe to be true about man kind.

Thanks to this site I have been able to share fish with folks in a way I have never been able to before. Before last year I only fished in the spring and put up crappie in hopes of making it through the winter without running out of fish. Joining last March I got interested in summertime fishing and pulling cranks. It was tuff at first but with the help of the folks on the MS board and encouragement they offered I stuck it out and got to the point of being able to catch em fairly concistantly. This afforded me the opportunity to be able to share fish with alot of folks and it has been an absolute pleasure doing so. Down to maybe 10 messes left in the freezer its time to start back stocking up again. Thanks to the folks of this site tho I feel no pressure this spring to catch a whole years worth of fish in 3 or 4 weekis because I have been blessed with the knowledge to fish all simmer long succesfully.
Had the pleasure of meeting Slab at Sardis this past September and would like to take the opportunity to say thanks to him and the folks of this site for the willingness to help and share, its what is meant to be. Thanks all!!!

    Gotta testify too............
As a youngster @ 9, a WW1 vet kinda took me under his wing and taught me to fish & shoot squirrels. But
I'm just talking 'bout fishin' here. Imagine the concentration watchin' a cork, and him tellin' me if'n it moves
straight down, its a catfish. If'n if moves straight across the water without going down, its a perch, but.....
if'n it goes to the side and then down, for sure its a bass. About 75% of the time it happened just like that.
Who was I to argue with that kind of wisdom? This man lived off the land except for the salt & pepper he
purchased. Everything else he raised in the garden, ground into meal & flour and canned and stored. Butchered
his own meats and smoke housed the meat. I haven't met another person like him in my lifetime. Now, today
I too am blessed, and have allowed seniors to come fish my pond and take hundreds of pounds of channel cats
home to feed themselves and their friends. Some of them seniors have passed on and the ones that still walk
the isles of Wal-Marts are friendly and remember the good times before the pond went dry due to the drought.
Memories and friends and fishin', makes life worth livin'. Thanks for this thread and the good stories.
    Bless all of you'all.

The feeling of gratitude is sometimes better than the taste of fillets

Well Monday evening was another great time fishing. The gills and crappies were on the feed once again, but just not for everyone. I arrived in a bay about the same time as a boat with an older couple and 3 kids that looked to be in their 20s. There were already 2 other boats in the same area. It was around 6:30 pm and the wind was down to just about nothing. I could see minnows begining to come to the surface and it was only a matter of a few minutes before I saw the feed begin. Gills and specks began blowing minnows up in several large schools. My little jigs were being eaten one cast after another as I paddled from one feeding frenzy to the next. I couldn't help but notice that the boat which arrived at the same time as me was not having much luck at all so I eased over to about 20 yards from them and just watched. The first thing I noticed was the big red and white bobbers on each of the lines. Then I saw a big fat chunk of crawler hanging about a foot under a large split shot, about 4 feet under that big ole bobber. I just couldn't stand it so I eased a little closer and asked if they were trying to catch panfish. They informed me that they had been trying for the past 3 days to catch enough for a decent fish fry but were just not having luck. I then asked if they would like a couple tips that might help them put a few fish on their stringer. They were happy to listen to my advice. The first thing I did was told them all to reel in their baits and just watch for a second. I scanned the water nearby. We only sat for a minute or two before I started seeing the backs of nice gills and crappies emerging from the surface of the water. It was a large school of panfish not more then 30 feet from the family of anglers boat and they had no idea. They actually thought it was weeds on the surface. I pointed out to them that they were definitely fishing far below the majority of the fish and that they should immediately raise their baits. I also had them remove the split shots and scale down the size of the crawler they were using. Then I flipped my little jig into the mess of fish and it no sooner hit the water when a nice bluegill sucked it in. When I set the hooked the surrounding water boiled as the hooked fish made a mad dash through the rest of the school. The look on the families faces was priceless. They really didn't have a clue. I then paddled away and left them to fish. I went about my business putting a dozen and a half nice specks and gills in my bucket and was ready to head back to the house when I saw one of the kids in the boat putting a decent bluegill on their stringer, which still only had 4 fish on it. I was feeling pretty bad for them so I paddled back over to them and asked if they needed a few more fish to help with that fish fry they were wanting. At first they didn't want to take my fish because I then would not have any, but when I informed them that I really did have plenty at home, they were more than willing. Now I love fishing, and I love eating fish, but the gratitude I was given from that nice family was worth more than any batch of fillets in my freezer. What a great evening of fishing it was.
