biggest thing I am looking for is how are maps installed, sd cards or download?
the gpsmap76 garmin is a good unit
I've got a Garmin 76csx and I love it. It's much better than the gps software in my HB 998. You can even make your own custom maps with free terrain data off government servers, a feature much lacking in my $1720 sonar unit. I've made maps of my farm with 3ft contour intervals. Not that I need it since I've been stomping this ground for 40+ years, but it's still way cool. When I'm navigating to some structure I've marked on the lake I always refer to my Garmin and just leave the HB screen on si.
Stay away from the Lowrance H2Oc (color). It's totally useless unless you're going at least 4-5mph.

Delorme pn40 you can overlay jags, sat, and aerial images on the map. Very handy to aid navigation and with the right map you can follow canals
Hard to beat a plain 'ole Garmin Etrex for the money. An electronic compass is a nice feature to have if you can spend the extra money.
