Wow, thanks for all of your help everyone!!! I feel like I actually have somewhat of an idea what Im gonna be doing whenever I go, thanks!

So Im just gonna thread these things right onto some jigs right? Then I just work it like a bass jig, but in open water, jig it up, reel slack, then let fall?

The 10% fishermen have knowledge and experience and a little something extra that makes them great fisherman and they catch the lions share of fish while the 90% watch and copy. Quality tourny fishermen are 10%'rs, and many amateurs are. I suspect there are several 10% fishermen that post here.
I would have to agree with you that a relatively small percentage out of all people who fish catch a relatively larger percentage of the total fish caught. In the business world that's called the 80/20 Rule. Now it would be interesting to actually know which of all the different presentation methods is used most.

Personally, I prefer a verticle presentation where I can stay in strike zone over casting for crappie. I like casting for the sometimes too, but that would have to be only 10% of the time.

    Default 80/20 rule

In regards to the 80/20 rule.
I fall into the 20 part of that equation (lol) I am in the 20% of the fisherman that catch only 20% of the fish only 20% of the time I go. Sometimes it may go even lower than that.
I can't leave now; They fixen to turn on.

Default Crappie Fishing (working a jig)

Tony, working a crappie jig is quite a bit different that fishing a bass jig. A steay, slow retrieve with an occaisional twitch of the rod tip (and I mean twitch, just a tic) seems to be the most consistent retrieve. Once in awhile the fish want it a little faster, but not often. Experiment until you get bit, and just like bass fishing repeat the technique. Nice to see another AB guy on the board too , even if it is the 101:D .

I would agree with Jim, the retrieve is very different. Many who jig fish for bass are basically working it across the bottom or near there. With crappie you should count it down to know your depth. A 1/16th oz. jig will fall about 1 ft. per second. Cast, count down and try all depths and do your best to work around and through the brush. Don't be discouraged when you get hung up. There is an old saying - if you ain't fishing the wood, you're ain't crappie fishing.

Anyway, it's the same when pitching a jig with a long pole. You let out as much line as wanted to achieve the maximum depth desired (ie: 15ft. of line when using a 12ft. rod), pitch the jig out past the brushpile and let it fall keeping the line tight to detect bites. The jig will fall and swim in an inverted arc tempting all depths through the water column. Once your line is verticle, work it there for a while at the precise depth you see fish holding on your graph. Pitch again and keep repeating the process. This method can be used in 3ft. of water and as deep as 20+.
