Hey All,
thats where a 4 wheel drive comes in handy,I pull my boat with a 4cyl toyota pu,bass tracker 175 and just shift into low range on the ramps with no problem.Seems to makr backing down a lot easyer also.
i have a 2004 (18') ranger reatta. it's a great boat but i have a mid size dodge dakota with a v8 it pulls the boat out of the water without a problem i have a small problem backing the boat down in the water it tends to drag the truck down to the water if i go to fast. i dont seem to have this problem with a full size truck. also due to pulling the boat long distance ( a couple hours) i have started to develop transmission problems. I also installed load bearing shocks in the rear of the truck to help support the weight.

Have a Crappie day!
I have the exact same truck - 4 door Toyota Tacoma TRD with rear electronic diff lock. I'm setting up a 18.5 bass boat for fishing right now and I was worried about pulling with it so I stopped and talked with my transmission guy, who happens to have the same truck in long box. He said the transmission, drive shaft and the rear axle are all the same as the full sized Tundra and is rock solid. Also, the TRD provides an auxillary transmission and oil cooler. He did mention that when running hills, do not put it into overdrive and to be sure and to manual shift into low when pulling out as that engages additional clutches that are otherwise not used. For heavy intown towing, he would manual shift the entire range. Now, he pulls a 17' tin boat with a 60, an 18 or 20ft pontoon with a 50 and a 30' camper with a slide. He says "never had a problem". Take that for what it's worth, but the boat I'm planning to pull and the boat your talking about are going to be in the same weight class. I'm not worried about pulling it, I'm worried about stopping it. That's some serious, hurt you weight back there. My boat will have hydraulic drum brakes, but I really wish it was electric disc. There's no way I would pull my boat, or yours with my truck without some kind of brake system on it though. The truck only has front disc and rear drums on top of being on the light side. If you do a lot of trips, you can plan on eating up your brakes at about twice the normal rate, at least.
Me, I'm 5 miles one way from the ramp and fish about twice a week when I'm real, real lucky. Plus I'll make a half dozen to a dozen 30 mile runs. That's not a lot to ask of the truck, but I'm gonna be puckered when I'm hooked up worrying about an emergency stop.
