    Default What Price Friendship?

From your second post it seems that maybe he wasn't what you would really call a friend. Anywho - If I like someone enough to feed them and then take them fishing a $40 rod would be a small price to pay for the companionship. Now if it was a family memeber it would be a different story. I like my friends a lot more than my family. LOL

There was a book out a few years back "Lifes Too Short To Sweat The Small Stuff - and it's all small stuff". In the scheme of our short lives here this would be small stuff.

    Just my humble SC opinon.

    Merry Christmas All!
I have spent most of my life fishing.
The rest I have just wasted.

    Wink Good question....

I tell ya, every year I get new equipment for Christmas. I use the old ( I call them my hand me downs ) , just for guest, kids, and anyone that I can tell has never used fishing equipment before. For that matter my own family uses them.

Man, my opinion is take the money and put some more with it and buy your Buddy a brand new rig for CHRISTMAS .....

Repair the other for your guests......... Thats what I have done....

I bet you would not only feel extra good about it, but you would grow closer than you ever have been.....

    Merry Christmas

    Default One Man's Opinion

There is a part of just about every post here, about one word, HONESTY. The word is also being asked in posts here. Should I be honest, and or, should the friend be honest? Do we look at the outside of a person, or do we look within a person, those things that make up, what he or she is all about.

Nothing in this world is perfect, not even the $40 rod. Could it be that there was a flaw inside, that could not be seen from the outside? Too many things are assumed, but yet not known. We set too high a standard on material things, and their worth.

Do we also hold others to the same standard as we do material things? Do we value them just for their worth to us? We cannot change another's human nature, nor can they our's. We can only show them in our own actions.

I try very hard to treat all people, in the same way that I want to be treated, with respect. But yet cannot expect that to always happen. Sometimes it is better, to let things drop, then to make an issue of it. Other times, we should think out our thoughts, before reacting. Even if it means, hours or days later. The situation cools down, and we are better able to discuss it with the other person.

Some of you have made new friends here, and have even met them, and fished with them. Was taking a chance, worth what you received in return? We each recieve out of life, what we are willing to put into it. All those non material things, of one's self worth.

This post is not written, to try to cause anyone any harm. Nor to point any fingers at anyone, or to try to change their thinking. Just as the title reads, it is just "One Man's Opinion."

Merry CHRIST-mas, and or Happy Holy-Day to all. Keith

From the time he got to my house he was complaining about this and that and wanted a steak dinner, etc. He thought I was trying to get off cheap by having a FRESH fried crappie dinner. Heck I spent the afternoon before catching fish just for the big fry. Either way, I started this post to see what the opinion was about people breaking your things and who then replaces it.

It wasn't a tip broken but an eye that is set under the glass, The rod is a loss. But it did have something I didn't think about....A WARRANTY. Thank you Ugly Stick. But now the real delima is if I send it in and get another free of charge, do I tell him now that he has gotten all mad at me. Who knows?

I think it's a simple case about the $$$ though...If a friend wrecks your car wouldn't you expect him to fix it? I think principals are in play...
Now your character comes into play! He paid you the $40.00 for the broken rod and you turned it into Ugly Stick, and will get it replaced for free, which means it really didn't cost $40.00 after all. Will you give him his money back and tell him the rod was replaced for free, or will you just keep the money and not say anything to him.
My true friends that I take fishing give me money everytime to help pay for gas and bait if we use bait. My other friends, have never offered to pay for anything on our fishing trips. Just one thing I noticed is the ones that help pay for expenses are Democrats and the ones that have never offerd to pay for anything are my Republican friends. Just an observation. Don't want to get anything started, but just an observation

The Ugly Stick is about $40 once you add in shipping. This isn't my first rodeo.

Now that the dust has settled I think Slab Hunter might have a good suggestion. Take the $40 and buy your buddy a new rod for Christmas, get you old one fixed and let it go. He'll have a fishing rod to use the next time you two go fishing and you haven't lost a friend. Sounds like a Win- Win idea to me.

    Eager,
I would never climb in another man's boat, use his bait and tackle unless he allowed me to help with the expenses and I am a Republican.
    Birddog,

I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast I then most humbly pray. When in the Lord's great landing net and peacefully asleep. That in His mercy I be judged, BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.

What the heck does being a Democrat or Republican have to do with any of this?

You could have sac-a-lait pegged there Beave. However, could it be a reflection on your character coming in the play running with dead beats? Sheesh, Republicans and Democrats..Dayum...just an observation.
I never ask for money if someone goes fishing with me..why?..because I'm going anyway. If they break one of my poles, tough, I suck it up, which has only happened once. I do enough damage on my own. If someone wrecks my truck..and they have to pay for it, hmmmmmm, my insurance must have lapsed.

Back about oh, 23 years ago, a friend's dad "planted" a Fenwick
Lunkerstik/Abu 4500C outfit in about 40' of water up at Pickwick for me -
mumbled something about arthritic hands and said he'd buy me another.
I still haven't seen it, do you think I should give up, or keep waiting on it Dang, I haven't talked to that man since then, not because of
the loss, just moved away and lost contact... I may have to look him up
and ask about his political affiliations But what if he's changed sides during
the 23 years??? Is it more important what he called himself then, or now?

    fishingpox,
    Exactly what I was thinking.
